Top 7 reasons to have a dental check-up and clean.

At every examination for both new and existing patients we we carry out a 10 point check of your mouth and surrounding areas for signs of disease. This includes extra-orally:the jaw joint, palpation of the cervical lymph nodes;Intra-orally the soft tissues of the cheeks, lips, tongue, floor of mouth, the hard and soft palate to look for signs of oral cancer and other conditions. We examine your teeth to look for signs of decay, wear, fractures. We also examine your gums for signs of gum disease.

Prevent Oral cancer

It is estimated that about 6000 cases of oral cancer are diagnosed each year in the UK. There is a strong link with tobacco use as well as a link with alcohol use. Over exposure to the sun can increase the risk of cancer of the lips. As with all forms of cancer the earlier the diagnosis the better the prognosis. As part of our examinations we check you mouth for changes which can be signs of oral cancer.

To prevent gum disease and keep your teeth

When the gum tissues and bones become infected, this is known as gum disease – one of the top causes of tooth loss in adults. If the condition is diagnosed early enough, it can be treated and possibly even reversed. However, when left untreated it can lead to more serious forms of the disease. It’s important to go for regular cleanings and check-ups, and to brush twice a day and floss every day to help prevent this disease.

To help maintain good physical health.

Recent studies have linked heart attacks and strokes to gum disease, resulting from poor oral hygiene. A dental cleaning every 3 -6 months helps to keep your teeth and gums healthy and could possibly reduce your risk of heart disease and strokes. Also keeping your teeth means better chewing function and ultimately, better health.

To detect dental problems early and keep costs for treatment down

Your dentist and hygienist will be able to detect any early signs of problems with your teeth or gums. Early detection of cavities, broken fillings and gum disease are easily treatable. If these problems go untreated, root canal, gum surgery ,crownsand removal and replacement of teeth with dental implants could become the only treatment options available. So this will also help keep costs for remedial work down..

To maintain good oral health.

The dentist and the hygienist will help to ensure that you are maintaining your good oral health by visual examination and comparing your previous dental records. If you are falling off track with your oral hygiene they will help put you back on the right path.

To have a bright and white smile.

Your dental hygienist can remove most tobacco, coffee and tea stains. During your cleaning, your hygienist will also polish your teeth to a beautiful shine. The result? A whiter and brighter smile!
